Fun Inversions!

Yes, I am getting some progress with my head stand… well finally… After my long break of 4 long days from any yogic exercise… I am back in action. Today I went to an inversion class which focuses on just inverted poses! Fun!

We did headstand ( of course, normal one and the tripod ), handstand and forearm balance. One toughie was going from crow up to handstand… with a partner helping of course.

Well, what are my achievements? First of all, I overcame my handstand kick up fiasco… I have this weird problem of unable lift the kicking leg up. The other leg would be up but the kicking one will still be heavy and down… and hence I cannot consistently kick up… sometimes can, sometimes cannot. It was most frustrating. One teacher was saying that one of my shoulder could be having problem and the body could be trying to lean to the other side and avoiding putting weight on the shoulder. But I found out not.

This teacher taught us to practice jumping from downdog, pressing down on the toes, bending the knees and then push and jump up ( L-shaped ). In effect, you will be shifting your weight to the hands. With this, miraculously after a few practice of this jumping, I was able to kick up quite easily and effortlessly into handstand ( against wall of course ). In fact, I did it several times consistently and there was once which I was balanced without the wall ( for a brief 2-3 seconds ). Amazing! It’s like my body suddenly realised that “oh shift weight to hands and legs light and weeee “… no more landing with a thud on the wall… great stuff! I love going to different teachers’ classes, you get to learn lots of interesting techniques as well as reminders of techniques you have done before.

Oh yes… back to my headstand. It’s not perfect yet… but I feel I am getting there. I can feel myself balancing in the posture a bit more already. In fact, I found that I can do the tripod headstand. Previously I could only hold my knees on my forearms and I was wondering how to go up. Today I overheard a student telling another to go up by pressing the knees together… voila.. so that’s how’s its done. It was an amazing feeling to be able to do headstand I must say… unique and weightless ( viewing everything else upside down ) abeit a painful crown. :)

In conclusion, I can say that inversions are a matter of getting used to. The more you do them, the less hard they become. We humans do not go around being upside down all our lives. It’s like eating smelly tofu… the more you eat, the more you love it ( smelly tofu is a type of fermented tofu which smells real bad like rubbish, but tastes great! you get addicted to it…)

yoga is amazing! ~om~
