I went to a inversion class today. In the class, there were 2 groups, 1 group is the beginners and the other group is the “advanced”. Me being the “in-between” was at the “advanced” side. So as the teacher goes around helping each of us in the advanced group, I was stealing looks at the beginner group. I remembering how hard it was for me when I just started. Body is just so heavy to kick up etc. Seeing them attempt again and again had me wanting to go over and to tell them that it’s ok, we will all get it eventually. I want to tell them that I started from there too. And worked my way slowly but steadily. There is no perfect pose, there is always another more difficult pose and more challenging sequences. However, what matters most is what you learn out of the whole experience of trying it.
Everytime I try a new pose, there is a little fear in me “woah, can I do that? hmmm…i might hurt myself” But after you tried it, no matter how crappy the pose is, you learn a little more about your body. You get to feel how it is like. It is like self awakening of parts of muscles/bones etc which you never knew existed. Your body is an amazing creation. When you realised that, you respect your body more and learn to love it more.
Once you tried it once, the next time round, the fear goes subsides. “cool, i can do that. hmm maybe abit more deep into the pose, let’s try it” At this stage you feel more in control as you have experienced the pose already. Now your body is willing to go deeper and try new ways to improve.
All things in life is about trial. If you don’t try, you never learn and grow. Or if you do not challenge yourself occasionally, you will not grow.
I love that feeling especially knowing that you can do all the poses, it is just a matter of time and it is different from everyone. So if you feel like you are not as good as someone else in the class, DON’T. Just don’t give up and keep on improving yourself. You are as good as anybody else!
