Trikonasana Variation – 1 UP

Fantastic day! I had the honor of another yogi, Richard visiting my blog and commenting that he like what I posted about how to go into pigeon. I feel so honored and happy that my tiny blog has someone REAL to read!

Thank you , Richard! Your comment made my day :)

The style of going into this pigeon pose that I described is basically Anusara yoga ( founder is John Friend) eg. consolidating back to body, opening of your heart, sinking of body into the arms etc. Anusara yoga focused mainly on having fun, celebrate you and alignment. So far, I really enjoyed Anusara yoga and the class is usually in a light and fun mode, and everyone encourages each other as we grow together. Sometimes some of us will fall onto the floor giggling and laughing while trying a difficult pose. Just playful. I love such atmosphere.

Today’s class that I went to had some interesting twist to the Trikonasana. After going into Trikonasana, to experience the pose more fully, bend slightly forward with your chest, rotate your thighs out to open your pelvic region ( like opening your hips ). All this time, make sure you keep your legs strong. Then maintaining, tuck your tailbone in and stretch your arms both direction, consolidate and stretch. Once you have done this, slowly move your hand on the floor towards the back of your head (hand still on floor but instead of in front, it will be on the floor behind). From here, do a backbend! Stretch your upper hand up and back, open your heart (rem to breathe) and try to touch the wall or person behind if someone is practicing beside you. Hehe… nice pose! I love it.

Matthew Sweeney is in town!!! I really wanted to attend one of his workshop on inversions, backbends and more but due to the monthly inconvenience, I’d have to sit it out… bummer! Next time then. However he will be conducting Mysore classes everyday at the studio for next week so I’d still have a chance to learn from him…. but at 6:45AM!!!! Hmmm… I hope I can wake up!

Anusara is fun! I took it for a year or so when I lived in Cincinnati. Now I mainly do Bikram just ’cause the studio is so close to me here. I love Trikonasana. Maybe you will like my post about is called “Salt in the Eyes Asana”. Take care!
