Mark Whitwell – Advancing Your Yoga

I missed his workshops. Yes. And I am hearing alot of good reviews of Mark Whitwell’s workshops.

Even so, I feel I am very lucky. I have a teacher who went and he is bringing Mark’s teachings and what he learnt or experienced during Mark’s workshops to his classes. I am blessed to have such a teacher.

Mark focuses more on breath as he believes that breath is our guru. Hence the class I had was very refreshing and had non of the so called “advanced” poses. No focus on the alignment. Instead we concentrated on our breaths. How we breathe in and how we breathe out. Just letting our breaths lead us to the pose. Actually Tuesday class was the same but I missed it due to work commitment ( pity, some of the students saud they felt great after the class next day and they don’t feel so tired )

It is interesting as this is the first time I try to focus on my breaths. Especially inhaling. I realised that my inhaling was pretty weak, I sort of “stuttered” on my last bit of taking in the breath. Indeed, breathing in deeply with full awareness is very difficult. Even more so in poses. Even simple ones like trikonasana ( aka triangle pose ).

But it was a great experience. A chance for practitioners to step back and focus on our breathing. Slow the practice and listen to the body. However, I believe i would be bored if such lessons continued :P I know me… I need to experience new things and to learn new things constantly. Now, is that why I am really bad at focusing on one thing? Food for thought…
In fact the night before I went for this beginner class and I pulled a muscle… yeah… in a beginner class. Weird me… never had problems in Advanced or Power Yoga but always get hurt in beginner classes… and as my records show, these classes are taught by indian teachers… hmmm… I will leave that for another post… hehe…

prana…. that’s what keeps us alive, for what are we without our breath? try doing your sun salutes to 5 or 8-10 (if you want more challenge, ahem. knowing you) counts of inhalation and exhalation throughout. it’s great.

i can’t wait to try this refreshing class. haha! you are so lucky! but, take care of that muscle, yah?
