Finally my cough is clearing up. But I do feel the body re-adjusting to daily yoga regime again. For the last 2 days, I had some muscles ache which was rare before my trip and sick break.
In fact, during the last stage when we were all in Savasana, I had cramps in my leg. We had to tense the muscles in each part of the body before totally releasing and dropping to the floor. This is actually an useful way for one to relax the body. However, when I earnestly tensed the muscles in my right leg, the calf muscles just went into a “cramp” mode. The contraction of the muscles was very intense and was soooo painful that the leg curled in pain.
What causes muscle cramps like this? According to About.com :
“… Other factors associated with muscle cramps include exercising in extreme heat, dehydration and electrolyte depletion. Cramps are more common during exercise in the heat because sweat contains fluids as well as electrolyte (salt, potassium, magnesium and calcium). When these nutrients fall to certain levels, the incidence of muscle spasms increases.”
I think the warm ups and the stretching during the yoga class should be sufficient to prevent such cramps. I do believe my muscle cramps are due to the lack of electrolytes and dehydration. I guess I really need to drink more water and perhaps those sports drinks to replenish the salts in the system.
