I Miss My Anusara Yoga Classes…

I do miss the teachings of anusara yoga styled classes. As time passes, I am beginning to forget slowly the teachings of anusara yoga. Everytime I step onto a mat, I try to recall what Bo has taught in his classes back then. But time is a powerful “eraser”… now the only things that keep me reminded of Anusara are these :

1. The Anusara invocation.
I sing that every single day. Well, almost… when I walked to take a bus or train. It is sort of to myself but it is calming and beautiful. I remembered how all of us used to sing that 3 times in class together with Bo at the start of every class. Two times, call and response ( Bo sang one verse and all of us followed… ) One time together and finally an om ( or was it 3 oms?… :( memory fades… ) It was wonderful and lifting. The harmonious sound of all of us together.

2. Pigeon.
Always… which is why I love doing pigeon. It reminded me that it was Bo and Desiree, both my favorite Anusara teachers who made it possible for me. The importance of squaring the hips, the opening of the heart, shoulders back, hugging to the centre, elongating the spine in the pose. Whenever I do this pose, I remembered all these wonderful Anusara teachers.

3. Handstand.
Yes, handstand. I remembered long time ago, I cannot kick up to a handstand against the wall at all. And I feared it. And yes, we have to do it in every class by Bo. For the life of me, I can never kick up. Well, because of me doing the handstand everyday in Bo’s classes, finally I got it. Once I could kick up to handstand against the wall, it was fantastic! And from then onwards, I love handstand. It really gives you a high and I always feel pretty good after a handstand.

4. Hugging to the centre, softening the skin
This was used by Bo a lot in class previously. For the longest time, I did not get what he was trying to say. But when I finally did, I think it made a difference in my practice. Now I always tell myself this in most of the poses.

I really think I need to go back to Anusara…
